Every school has its traditions, and with SHSU’s motto of “The measure of a life is its service” General Sam Houston it should come as no surprise that their largest tradition focuses on service within the local community. However, there is more to Sam Houston than just the community togetherness and here are five things you must do at Sam Houston State University.
1.) Participate in “Bearkats All Paws In”
Taking place every spring. This amazing event brings the entire University together alumni and students, alike. The day begins with a free breakfast for the volunteers, the handing out of T-shirts and assignments as well as water and snacks for the coming days activities. Speeches are given a picture is taken and the groups are then disbanded all over the town to do community outreach.
Some students end up collecting trash, others build walls, some will paint, and still others will plant gardens. It is a day of bonding and fun for everyone as you often get to work outside enjoying the fresh air as you provide a helping hand for someone in need.
2.) Visit at least one Battle of the Piney Woods
The rivalry between Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin is a strong one, and each year at football season, the two teams go head to head for a fantastic performance of athleticism. The entire school is pumped up at the pep rally, and the game usually take place at a median location so all students from both Universities has an equal chance of attending the game. The stands are packed more so than at any other sporting event over the course of the entire year. The battle of the Piney Woods is the Super bowl of SHSU.
3.) You must stop and listen to the Hell Fire and Brim Stone Preachers
That frequently pay a visit to the University. Whether you are a believer or non-believer, the reactions often instigated are humorous and entertaining for anyone who stops. On many occasions, some students will argue with the preachers bringing about great debate, at other times however, emotions can run a bit high requiring University personnel to step in.
No matter what side of the issue you stand on you will find the reactions of not only the students but also the preacher to be of great entertainment.
4.) Spend some time basking
In the sun’s rays on the grassy null near the Old Main Pit; it’s a relaxing and beautiful spot to have a picnic and/or to do light studying. This location is also great for people watching. Just remember to bring a blanket as the grass can sometimes become quite itchy.
5.) If you can manage to get into the Human Sexuality
Course hosted by the Psychology department, it is highly recommended. Some students may balk at the idea that a class on sex would be anything more than uncomfortable, but many students leave the class having learned a lot. Students learn not just about their own sexuality, but also that of their partners as well. Non-psychology and psychology majors, alike, race to get into the course, which is often one of the first filled.
